Medical Simulation Technology:

In medical simulation, computer-controlled equipment advances medical learning and ensures that students learn procedures and treatment protocols before using them on actual patients. A simulation environment allows students and providers to learn, practice, and repeat procedures as often as necessary in order to correct mistakes, fine-tune their skills, and optimize clinical outcomes. In addition, with simulation, students and residents can gain experience with various types of patients and cases they may not actually encounter during their rotations and shifts. This is particularly significant for training in managing emergency situations. Patients with serious and volatile conditions may not get second chances.

The equipment and simulation training procedures at the Simulation Center are designed to make learning realistic for students, residents, and providers.

Four kind of training are available at the center:

Human Patient Simulators — The simulation technology centerpiece is a full-sized patient simulator that blinks, breathes, and has a heartbeat and pulse. Attached monitors display vital signs. It provides virtual simulation of almost every major bodily function. This simulator can be used for a range of scenarios from physical examination to major trauma. For instance, the virtual patient can be programmed to have a heart attack, with other sudden complications. The simulator even recognizes injected medications via a laser bar-code reader and responds with appropriate vital signs. It is particularly helpful for practicing the teamwork and communication required during heart attacks and other major clinical events.

Simulated Clinical Environments — An ICU/emergency room bay provides all the equipment for intubations, intravenous lines, and suction as well as a crash cart. Four examination rooms are available for practicing patient exams and communication skills. In addition, there are procedure skill rooms for venous catheterization and other procedures.

Virtual Procedure Station — A computer-controlled simulation device is available for teaching IV line placement. Using this simulated program, students insert the IV line into a special computer console, designed to be anatomically realistic, instead of a real patient. Learners move the dials on the handpiece exactly as they would with a real scope, following their movements in real time on a detailed computer screen image of the arm. It also allows students to practice blood-drawing techniques, from skin cleaning and needle selection to puncture technique and aftercare.

Significantly, the simulators present a variety of different clinical scenarios that simulate many types of patients with different diagnoses and pathology. Therefore, students practice much more than procedure technique; they learn to apply their skills in a range of realistic clinical situations.

Performance Recording — The Center have video cameras and microphones in each of the major teaching areas, with a connection to a wide-screen monitor in the debriefing room and conference hall. Observers in the conference room can watch a learning activity and offer feedback. Learners also have the opportunity to watch recordings of their learning activities to observe their performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

The Faculty at the Learning center meets once a week to develop new scenarios, protocols to enhance competency assessment, team concept and plan regular CMEs.

Courses Details:

Basic Life Support Provider Course (Certification by American HEART ASSOCIATION)
This course will help the participant acquire the knowledge and skill needed for fundamental patient evaluation and stabilization in the event of emergencies. They will be able to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. They will be able to understand the value of standard guidelines for resuscitation.

ADVANCED CARDIAC Life Support Provider Course (Certification by American HEART ASSOCIATION)

The duration of the ACLS Provider course is two days. Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPCR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation.

ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader.

PEDIATRIC ADVANCED LIFE SUPPORT PROVIDER COURSE

The PALS Provider Course is designed to provide participants with the information needed to recognize infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest, strategies to prevent arrest, and the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize those in respiratory failure, shock, or cardiopulmonary arrest.

PEARS COURSE: The Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) course prepares a student to assess, categorize, decide and act early to stabilize the child. The main focus of PEARS is prevention, and specifically the assessment, recognition and stabilization of pediatric victims at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress. Through unique learning tools, such as video-based simulation, providers can see and hear critically ill children with whom they do not typically come in contact, equipping them to recognize the symptoms of pediatric victims, and thus begin stabilization prior to arrest.

STREAM: Simulation in Trauma Evaluation and Management   Course is foundation skills program that teaches the basic concepts of trauma management and safe transport of trauma victims. It is targeted at medical students, junior doctors, nurses and other paramedical staff who have a role on treating trauma victims in the field or in the hospital setting. The course consists of three sessions with duration of one and a half days. The first session deals with the theory and basics of trauma management & transport. The other two sessions are practical small group learning using mannequins & models. The highlight of the course is real-life trauma simulation that gives the participants and opportunity to use the theory & skills they have learned during the course. The course is limited to 20 participants.

Mechanical Ventilation: A two day up to date review, with small group hands on session to reinforce both basic and essential concepts of mechanical ventilation that every doctor who takes care of patients on invasive and/or non invasive ventilator needs to know. The first day focuses on the basic concepts of ventilation while the second day is spent on more advanced concepts including ventilator graphics. Small group hands on workshop enables candidates to try and trouble shoot real life scenarios, get a feel of ventilator manipulations and interact with their tutors closely. This workshop is a must for every fresh ICU trainee and an excellent opportunity for the seasoned intensivist to update ventilatory concepts.

Difficult Airway Management Workshop: This course offers the participants a simulation-based hands-on training on how to manage a patient with a difficult airway. It covers training on LMA, Combitube, Fiberoptic Intubation, and Cricothyroidotomy.

12 LEAD ECG COURSE: This course is geared towards understanding the conduction system of the heart and with that understanding, interpreting ECG rhythms.

VASCULAR ACCESS WORKSHOP: It includes both peripheral and central simulation based workshop on sim-man and virtual Iv monitor and is one of its kind in world. It also includes application of ultrasound as a tool, and valuable for all those who have little or no experience of diagnostic ultrasound, and would like to become proficient in all the basic concepts of ultrasound techniques in peripheral vascular access.

FLUID AND ELECTROLYTE IMBALANCE MANAGEMENT: This one day enlighting session includes composition of standard oral and IV solutions, appropriate laboratory studies and their interpretation. pathophysiology of electrolytes imbalances, daily water and electrolyte requirements, factors which increase daily fluid requirements and conditions in which fluid administration may need to be restricted.

MEDICAL STUDENTS SUTURING WORKSHOP: The one day course is hands on training in enhancing and learning various suturing techniques, knot tying, understanding suture materials and putting those cosmetic correct sutures.

BASIC NURSING SKILLS WORKSHOP: This course and hands on training workshop includes peripheral IV access, Basic aseptic precautions, infection control, waste management, bedside etiquette, recording vitals, documenting medical records, sample collection and other essentials of essentials nursing practice.

ADVANCED NURSING SKILLS WORKSHOP: This interactive course is of one day duration and can only be taken after successful completion of basic nursing skills workshop. It includes drawing arterial samples, invasive monitoring, simulation based enteral tube placement, catheterization and assisting in central lines, chest tubes and difficult airway scenarios. Provides more in-depth knowledge in managing ventilated patients.
