According to ayurveda,”
Mahabhuta”, the five elements of nature (Akasha, Vayu, Agni, Jala & Prithvi) present themselves in the body as “
Tridoshas”, the three forces known as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. These doshas relate closely to the basic elements of nature and to specific functions of the body. A balance of these doshas is required for Arogya, optimal health.
According to Ayurveda, to be healthy is not only the absence of disease. It is the state of balanced functioning of all aspects of the human body, including the mind and soul. A balanced body is indicative of a balanced mind, and because it is balanced is immune to disease
Each of us is born with a Prakruti (individual constitution) made up of the Tridoshas. Our prakruti is determined by our parent's doshas at the time of conception. Over time, through improper diet, poor sleep, emotional trauma, stress, etc. our prakruti becomes out of balance and thus the doshas also. Herbal medicines and treatments are prescribed based upon the dosha type of an individual.Ayurveda prevents the development of disease by working with the individual in order to restore the body back to its natural state, by pacifying the doshas. The goal is to balance the elements by using diet, exercise, herbs and cleansing programs, so health will follow.
Ayurveda has become a healing science concerned with maintaining balance and well-being through proper diet, efficient digestion, personal hygiene, life style, and herbal supplementation for internal cleansing, rejuvenation, mental acuity, fertility, and immunity. It combines the accuracy of science with the sublimity of philosophy, metaphysics, poetry, and art. Its functional principles are undying and universal.
The Ayurvedic approach is more humoral than mechanical, more subjective than objective, and relative as opposed to specific

TYPES OF TREATMENT
There are mainly 2 types of treatment in Ayurveda depending on their action in the body, namely
- SHAMANA
- SHODHANA
In Shamana different medicinal preparations are used both internally and externally to passify imbalance of Doshas. Usage of Swarasa (Extracts of leaves), Kashaya (decoction), Choorna (herbal powders), application of oil, herbal paste etc. come under this.
Shodhana consists of the treatments by which the body is cleansed and becomes free from its internal and external impurities. It can be divided into,
- BAHYA - External
- ABHYANTHARA - Internal
BAHYA
Bahya shodhana comprises of the external therapies like Abhyanga (oil massage), Udwarthana (powder massage), Lepa (application of herbal paste) etc.
ABHYANTHARA - PANCHAKARMA
Panchakarma is considered to be the most effective therapy for preventing and curing disease and revitalizing the human body. It reverses the negative effects of stress on your body by removing impurities, slowing the aging process and restoring vitality, leaving you with a deep sense of peace. It is designed to ripen the Dhathus (body tissues) by Poorvakarma and divulge them of vitiated Doshas (the impurities) by the main 5 therapies namely, VAMANA, VIRECHANA, VASTHI, NASYA AND RAKTHAMOKSHANA so that the body can heal itself and function at optimal levels. It is a scientific approach that involves a specific series of treatments, designed to meet your individual needs. This deeply cleansing process will give you a fresh start, as you leave behind impurities, fatigue, as well as physical, emotional, and mental stress.
To get the best results of Rasayana one should undergo proper panchakarma therapy as a dye colours a clean cloth better than a dirty one.
RASAYANA CHIKITSA
Whatever that serves for augmenting the excellence of health, is the mode of rejuvenation. Rasayana is the word for rejuvenation in Ayurveda. This branch of Ashtanga ayurveda aims at achieving a long and healthy life. The philosophy of Ayurveda is to establish good health rather than just curing diseases. Rasayana is an active step towards achieving this. It prescribes treatment for repairing wear and tear of the body due to aging or diseases. Rasayana means that physical, mental and spiritual aid to the human body which brings the body out of its condition of natural or man made loss.
Rasayana basically boosts the Ojas (essence of Dhatus) and the immune system. The adjective Ojaswi is used to describe those people who keep good health in all seasons and all stages of life. Ojas gives a bright look, sharp memory, high performance and every expected pleasure. To achieve this state of health, intermittent regeneration of Dhatus (body tissues) is recommended by Ayurveda. Rasayana chikitsa is the optimal way to achieve this.
Before starting the rasayana schedule, the patient is advised to undergo Panchkarma. This helps in the initial detoxification of the body and prepares it for the rasayana regime. The rasayana regime includes several physical, mental and spiritual disciplinary activities along with medicines. Rasayana is supposed to supervise the individual in all respects of life for the period of treatment. It bestows upon a person, youth and energy. It enhances memory and brilliance. It improves the functioning of the special senses in addition to improving the longevity of life.
To summarize, rasayana-chikitsa is rejuvenation and it gives vital energy. It compensates for wear and tear due to age and diseases. It bequeaths the gift of health wrapped in longevity to a person who opts for it.
