NBE

What is NBE?

National Board of Examination was established by the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family welfare, in 1975, and later declared an independent autonomous organization in 1982, with the primary objective of setting up a standard for post graduate examinations in medical sciences in the country, considering the variation in the level of proficiency and standards of other postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations in India.

The National Board of Examinations foresees an increase in quality manpower requirements relating to surgical and medical specialties. It aspires to bring higher medical education and training within the reach of all medical graduates.

Objectives of NBE:

The main purpose for establishing the National Board of Examination was to set up an examining body that could evolve a pattern for the conduct of a high and uniform standard of postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations in medical sciences for the award of Diplomate of National Board, equivalent to MD/MS/DM/MCh of other Indian Universities as recognized by the Government of India and the Medical Council of India.

DNB is now recognized as the hall mark of excellence in the midst of university degrees and in today’s context with widespread commercialization of postgraduate medical education NBE provides a better alternative for the meritorious but less affluent medical graduates.

Minimum criteria for DNB qualification:

Centralized Entrance Test: – DNB

The previously known Primary Examination for admission to DNB courses is now known as ‘Centralized Entrance Test – National Board of Examinations [CET-NBE] and is held twice a year [January/July] as per schedule published in the Information Bulletin. It comprises of -

  • Written test conducted by NBE

  • Aptitude test [Interview] conducted by NBE Accredited Institutions

Candidates can appear for the primary exams immediately after the completion of final MBBS or even during their internship period.
