The Department of Bio-chemistry and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring is equipped with state – of – the – art auto analyzers with a fully automated random access facility and extends round-the-clock services for routine testing. Hormones, Tumour Markers, Vitamin Testing are done on fully automated Random Access Immuno Assay analyzers including the sensitive Chemiluminescence and Electrochemiluminescence Technologies.

Extensive quality control methods – both internal and external are practiced in the department. The lab is NABL- 15189 accredited. The department also implements Six Sigma in the assessment and monitoring of the turnaround times and plans to further apply the tool in the improvement of their processes.

The Department of Biochemistry plays an important role in the quality control of POCT instruments in the hospital – glucometers and blood gas analyzers. A unique in-house developed programme implements linearity testing of all the ward glucometers once a month; this programme has been appreciated as a global best practice by the JCI auditors in 2007.

The department, on behalf of TAB (Twin Cities’ Association of Biochemists, Regd 930/2007) has been conducting a quarterly Inter-laboratory Immunoassay Comparison Programme (TAB-IICP) since 2006; about 20 labs of the Twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad participate in it.

Specialized investigations done in the department

    • Thyroid Testing.
    • Reproductive Hormone Testing.
    • Other Hormones like cortisol, growth hormone, insulin, parathyroid hormone.
    • Anemia Testing.
    • Vitamins: B12, Folate and 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D3.
    • Special Lipid and Cardiac Markers – like Lp(a), Homocysteine, TNT, CKMB (mass) and Pro-BNP.
    • Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: Antiepileptics, Antibiotics,    Immunosuppressants.
    • Electrophoresis : Protein and Haemoglobin.*
    • Double marker testing -1st trimester.
    • Triple Screen – 2nd Trimester.
    • Quadruple marker Screening -2nd trimester.
    • Specific Protein assays using Nephelometry.
    • Manual Tests like Adenosine deaminase (ADA) in body fluids, copper, ceruloplasmin, urinary VMA & urinary Metanephrines etc.

* Recent up gradations in the department:

“MINICAP – Fully Automated Electrophoresis System based on Capillary Technique” from ‘SEBIA’ has been installed and validated in the department.

This is the first installation of its kind in our state.

Hence forth, the reporting of Serum and Urine Protein Electrophoresis, Hemoglobin Electrophoresis and also Immunotyping would be done with this system.

Some of the key advantages of this MINICAP system over the conventional agarose gel technique are:

    • Most Sophisticated Technology of Liquid Flow Electrophoresis.
    • Fast and highly efficient separation of the molecules with excellent resolution.
    • Migration and Quantification is very fast.
    • Customizable printing allowing compressed printouts of results and curves.
    • Throughput: Protein – 22 samples/ Hour; Hemoglobin – 10 samples/ Hour; Immunotyping – 2 samples/hour.
    • Capillary technology allows quantifying all major Hemoglobin variants in a single run, it allows complete separation of Hb E fraction from Hb A2 and also allows separation and quantification of Hb H and Bart’s.
    • Also, there is no interference from the Glycated fractions in the quantification of major fractions.

Please note:

Schedule for these tests (SPE, HBE & ImmunoTyping):– Done on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Sample receiving time cutoff – 10 am on the scheduled day.
Reported by 6 PM on Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays.
